Day 3:

LELYSTAD
Most of the day we will be way below sea level in the polder of FLEVOLAND . After WW II the polders are made by building polder dikes in the Zuiderzee (South Sea) and pumping the sea water out. So today we will walk on the bottom of the sea. It is easy to proof, because you will be able to find many sea shells. The city of Lelystad is named after Holland 's greatest water engineer Dr. Lely, who planned the polder projects in the Zuiderzee. We will visit THE BATAVIAWERF where an authentic 17th century VOC cargo/warship is rebuilt only using 17th century ship building methods. The next ship is now being build an you will be able to see how. At walking distance you will find BATAVIASTAD a look a like 17th century town with wooden houses which are used as outlet stores. Again on walking distance from Bataviastad we will visit NIEUWLAND ERF GOED. This museum tells the story about the polders, how they were built, how they are kept dry and how it is to live there. If there is still time left we will visit AVIODROME. This museum is a full size remake of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in the early 1920's and shows you a lot of airplanes. |

Day 4:
 |
ENKHUIZEN ~ NAARDEN
The Netherlands were planning on building a third polder in the IJsselmeer ( IJssel lake - former Zuiderzee). The chosen name for it was Markerwaard. The polder dike is already built, the MARKERWAARDDIJK. Out of fear of destroying Holland 's natural environment the polder was never made. We will travel the polder dike for several kilometres with water right and left of us. At the East side of the dike is Lelystad and at the West side we will reach the very ancient fisherman's town ENKHUIZEN. This town still has that 17th century atmosphere. In your imagination you see the fisher ships and VOC ships leaving and entering the small harbour. We will visit the ZUIDERZEE MUSEUM , a nice folk museum in which you can experience, hear and see all about how fisher people living around the former Zuiderzee lived their lives. On our way back we will go past THE OOSTVAARDERSPLASSEN, a wet spot in the polder with many shallow lakes. It is the ideal environment for all kinds of waterfowl and migratory birds. From here it is only a short drive to VESTINGSTAD NAARDEN, an ancient fortified city. The original fortress, moats and garrison artillery is still there. |

Between 1942 and 1945 the German occupying power arrested and deported more than one hundred thousand Dutch Jews and foreign Jewish refugees from the Netherlands . The Nazis used Camp Westerbork for this purpose, which the Dutch Government had already established in 1939 as a national camp for Jewish refugees from Germany . In 1942 Camp Westerbork was designated 'transit camp': a temporary abode for Dutch Jews and others whom the Nazis wanted to destroy. Life in the camp was dominated by hope, but above all by fear. Almost every Tuesday a train would depart: a goods train filled with a fixed number of victims. Ninety-three such transports left. Only a few thousand people returned.
